Reprise 04:17
From the moment I was woken I haven't been much use I think my head is broken Everything's confused You can't put it right overnight If you focus on the moment When everything goes wrong You forget about the oceans Where we all get along You can't put it right overnight Just close your eyes: it'll be all right
3.
Fake ID 02:38
There's something in the water There's something in my eye There's someone in the mirror I used to recognise There's something in the water Or maybe in my genes A little medication Sometimes that's what you need There's something in the water There's something in my eye There's someone in the mirror I used to recognise I wonder what he's thinking He looks a bit like me Do you think that maybe it's a case of fake ID?

If I could figure out If I could understand I wouldn't be sitting here With my head in my hands I might be out Living life to the hilt Dancing round the house In a Highland kilt But it's not that simple So that's me: Living in fiction Causing friction Sobbing in the kitchen Because it's not that simple
5.
I'm not certain anymore It's what we're looking for I sink better than swim There's less to me than them They laugh and I'm confused Silent and not amused I swim worse than I sink You'll miss me when you blink No man is an island We're just a rock sticking out of the ocean I'm not a rock There's nothing left to give No more words to sing I've just enough to live But that's somewhere to begin No man is an island We're just a wreck sticking out of the ocean I'm not a wreck
6.
You take the left hand and I'll take the right hand Given time we'll dance our way across the floor It looks like we're done for You say I'm static: a man automatic Harsh words have sometimes led into a war It looks like we're done for I'd say I'm lacking in thought and in planning Truth is I'm being eaten to the core It looks like we're done for

8.
Somewhere in the pit of my mind I dropped the key to how to live life I'm trying hard to get it back Detection is a skill that I lack I'm not immune to knowing that it hurts To see me when I know I'm at my worst When silly things can cause me to fall It's written all over your face I don't enjoy behaving this way I can't control the thoughts in my head That make me feel... it's better not said I don't blame you for looking so surprised But some days I enjoy being alive I love the warmth of sun on my skin The effortless way the birds sing
9.
Living's not easy When you go to work half-fed And you get home from work half-dead And your mind's somewhere else in between And you can't find the words to capture the hurt that you feel We all know the pain and you'll feel it again Talking comes cheap I've nothing to say, I'll shut my trap and walk away And you can't find the words to capture the hurt that you feel We all know the pain and you'll feel it again The mood is as low as the sky is bright Full of a glow cos the moors are alight And you'll sit and you'll wait for the click of a gate That one day won't come Cos one day I'll keep walking
10.
Postscript 04:24
Hang on There's something I've forgotten Something that you need to know I won't keep you longer than I need to I'll get my coat then I'll go The truth is sometimes left unspoken And pride can come before a fall My head: it's not really broken Cos I'm not here at all At least I didn't still your money And if I stole a piece of your heart Then maybe it was there for the taking And now I'm falling apart

about

In August 2015 The Broken Heed released an album. It was an album I thought I would never write. At the same time, without realising, it was an album I had started to write many years ago.

The Broken Heed album was pulled together as I pulled myself and my mental health together. Some people asked if there would be a second album and were surprised when I told them I hoped not. I couldn't tell them why.

Now there is a second album and I can say why I had hoped not: because if there was no second album it would mean that I had nothing to write about, which would mean that I was better.

Life is life, though. I am better, sometimes, often. I have begun to understand my thought processes a bit better. I have also come to realise that throughout the past 25 years some of my songwriting was the product of earlier bouts of depression.

This second album under the guise of The Broken Heed collects new recordings of some of those songs - songs which were lucky if they got 4-track portastudio treatment in some cases - alongside newer songs whose existence I wouldn't have imagined 12 months ago.

Will there be a third album? I hope not. I can't guarantee it though...
